“In the 1,712 cumulative laps run at COT races, my unofficial count shows Dodges led 42 laps, Toyota and Ford five laps each and Chevrolets, 1,660. Parity? Hardly. More like a parody of parity, one in which all Cars of Tomorrow are equal, but some are more equal than others.
So much for the COT being the great equalizer, the tool that was going to make it possible for the next Alan Kulwicki to run a one-car team and fight the big boys for the Nextel Cup championship, for Robby Gordon and Jeff Gordon to be on a dead level playing field. The cold, hard reality is that the COT has had exactly the opposite fact that NASCAR wants in terms of competition. Far from tightening the field, it’s tilted it squarely in favor of Hendrick and Chevrolet.
NASCAR’s party line is that this isn’t a manufacturers issue, it’s a team issue, that the top Chevrolet teams simply have got their individua
