What Does “in The Chase” And “on The Bubble” Mean In A Nascar Race?

Posted on August 9, 2009

I have been watching NASCAR on the channel Five US here in the UK and the TV ticker-tape shows some drivers in green, meaning "in the chase", and others in yellow, meaning "on the bubble". What do both mean?

  1. In the chase means they would qualify for the chase for the Nextel Cup if it started right at that moment. The chase for the Nextel Cup is sort of like NASCAR’s postseason, where the top 12 drivers in the standings have a chance to win the championship. The chase itself is what the last ten races that determine the champion is called. On the bubble means they could still qualify if a driver ahead of them faltered and they did very well. They are not in the chase but not eliminated from possibly making it.

  2. in the chase-top 12 in current nascar standing
bubble- not in top 12 but got a shot

  3. The Chase means that the top 12 driver’s who will go or the championship this year.
The Bubble means those that still have a possible chance of making the Chase and knocking one of those already in the top 12 out of contention . However Jeff Gordon is automatically in the Chase because he has so many point’s

  4. Don’t know, sorry

  5. it states their eligibility for the Nextel cup. “in the chase” means u are locked in the running for the championship. “on the bubble” means a driver can make it in the championship run or not make it into the championship run.

  6. In the chase means your in the top 12 and you are in the run for the championship. If your on the bubble your still not in the chase but you have a chance of getting in

  7. If you are in the chase you are one of the top 12 drivers in the point standings. If you are on the bubble it means you are close enough in points to make the chase if things go your way.

  8. In the chase is the 12 drivers who will be in for the cup title…on the bubble are the ones who have the potential mathematically to still get into the chase for the title.

  9. The drivers, at the end of the racing season have a 10 race competition for the last scheduled 10 races. The drivers that are “in the chase” are the ones who ranked the highest throughout the season and had the top 10 highest points up to the last 10 races(the chase races). The “on the bubble” racers are the guys who could make it in depending on how everyone does right up until the last race just prior to the chase. It could come down to very few points difference right up until the very last race which is why they say some guys are on the bubble – if you do badly, you could be out. If the guy under you does better than you, you could be out and he could be in. Very unpredictable.
When the chase does begin, they start over with a new points count and then you see some real racing. You will catch on if you watch. It isn’t as hard as it seems.
